         About Me

My name is Mikah Turner-Alexander and I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from California State University Long Beach and a Masters Degree in Counselling Psychology from Adler University. I am mother of three, an advocate and a lifelong learner. I understand what it means to wear many hats as a woman and to sit in those roles interchangeably. My passion for this field has been with me since I was a little girl. The last 4 generations of women in my family have been helpers. Supporting has always been my path.

My approach is focused on validating each client's lived experience as unique and their feelings worthy of being prioritized.

The process of change and transformation begins once we are able to check in with ourselves and recognize when something is not working. I believe the messages and lessons are there once we start to pay attention. The most rewarding part of my work is being a witness for those who may not feel seen and to applaud the growth that allows clients to have healthier relationships with themselves and others.

I have spent the last decade supporting a variety of populations including at risk and marginalized youth, their families and caregivers in collaboration with MCFD (Ministry of Child and Family Development). This experience strengthened my trauma-informed approach, advocacy as well as techniques to develop and build healthy attachments and living environments.

I am honored to be a woman of color and privileged to support the BIPOC community. During times in my life when I searched for my own mental health support, I found it very difficult to find a face like mine. Representation of people of color in the mental health field continues to increase and I am proud to be of service during a time when reaching out for help isn’t as stigmatizing as it used to be. My Approach

I work by using a holistic approach during our time together. I draw upon Cognitive-Behavioral, Narrative, Client-Centered, Family Systems and trauma-informed frameworks. This means that I will follow your lead based on your comfort. Each session will progress at your pace, focusing on what you choose to bring into our space. As you are the expert on your experience, I don't presume to know more. My role is simply to support you. I will provide a safe, compassionate space for you to be exactly who you are.

In the beginning it may not feel that much "work" is being done, however

building rapport to establish trust and safety is my first priority. I understand the vulnerability of being a client, and discussing matters of the heart. This may be your first time with a counselor, or your first time addressing your particular concerns. I will ask questions to get a sense of how your lived experience has shaped you. Together we will develop a plan for your support and check in regularly to ensure you are getting what you are looking for.
